Walking the Great Wall for Overgate: Getting Behind Our Own

One of the greatest privileges of standing behind this bar is seeing the heart of our community in action. A pub is only ever as good as the folk who fill it, and this week we couldn’t be prouder to share what a few of our lovely locals are taking on.

One of the greatest privileges of standing behind this bar is seeing the heart of our community in action. A pub is only ever as good as the folk who fill it, and this week we couldn’t be prouder to share what a few of our lovely locals are taking on.

Next year, they are packing their walking boots and heading off to trek the Great Wall of China. It’s a monumental, knee-testing challenge of endless stone steps and steep climbs, but every single mile they cover is in aid of a charity that touches so many of us locally: Overgate Hospice in Elland.

If you’ve lived around here for any stretch of time, chances are you already know the incredible work Overgate does. When a family is facing the hardest days of their lives, Overgate steps in not just with specialist medical care, but with pure kindness, dignity, and warmth. They don’t just care for their patients; they wrap their arms around whole families, offering a sanctuary of peace, comfort, and support when it is needed most. It is an absolute lifeline in our community, relying heavily on fundraising to keep their doors open and their care free of charge.

Taking on thousands of historic steps in China is no small feat, but the fundraising starts right here at home, and we’d love everyone to rally round and help these lasses hit their targets.

There are two easy ways to get involved and chip in:

  • You can buy fundraising tickets directly from Becky Barraclough and Gemma Montgomery for the chance to win £500 in vouchers at their salons https://www.instagram.com/beckybarracloughbrows?vrfl=MWs3bnpieDR4M2ZnMg==
  • You can try your luck in a prize draw to win a fantastic hamper (displayed in the pub) packed full of goodies by picking up a raffle ticket over the bar for Maria Pownall.

Every single pound makes a genuine difference to the nurses and families down at Overgate. So next time you’re in for a pint or a bite to eat, please consider grabbing a ticket or popping some change into the collection.

Whatever you do, please get behind these ladies as they lace up for an incredible cause. We’re right behind them all the way! We must mention Jill Tattersley too as a good family friend - she’s also taking part in the trek xx
